 One of the most infamous combos in MTG is not possible to pull on T1 anymore when you're playing overprinted but... you can make it happen by T2, either with the help of that nifty Fallen Empires land:

Or you might pull it using a mana dork, be the original elf dude or birds of paradise:

Making it a 6 card combo if you like to live dangerously!

The spirit guides sadly will have to wait several editions to exist :).

Either way, specially if you started the game, you have a nice chance at full charred opponent by T2!

Overprinted lands in Sweden

 Yup, that's no exaggeration. The format was played this year's easter in at least the Rotary pub and then the main venue for the Noobcon 2025. Heresy we know.

On thursday 17th some casual games were had at the Rotary much to the enjoyment AND frustration of the participants.

Take for example our beloved Phy having the time of his life while doing the "evil guy hand" thing!

Or Francesc and Blazer here having the time of their life while armageddon flew unchecked!

Look at the beauty of a proper Oveprinted hand and despair!

Then, on Friday 18, after the swiss rounds were over at the Noobcon, revised cards appeared from under the floorboards and Chiki, Overprinted current world champion witnessed with horror as a wrath of god dealt with his gobbos. You don't let goblins life in a format with the Goblin grenade in it!

As you can see, the cradle of Old School magic has been properly and thoroughly polluted with the format, oh yeah,

First Overprinted Tournament ever

 So far the format was played very casually. So much in fact that it was mostly a side event once the swiss rounds were over in other more popular formats but late in december 2024 the first main event with Overprinted as the main thing took place in Basauri, a small town near Bilbao in northern Spain.

The small print on the poster reads "1st Overprinted MTG International invitational tournament" which I believe to be a sample of Basque people humour as it was played by locals mainly.

In the end there were different archtypes, some very experimental but the mono red goblins won this very first tournament ever.

 Question has arisen since the format went public and we talked about our legality of reprints post called Proxy Policy.

There is a specific card that does weird things to our brains: Serendib Efreet.

We talked about the "original art" and "old frame" but you see, the old Serendib dude lost their actual art when hitting revised edition. But only in the original english language revised... Foreing Black Border an Foreign White Border revised? ORIGINAL ART.

So yeah, you see, bot the original art from Arabian nights (reprinted later) and the errata with the Ifh Biff Efreet from english revised? LEGAL AF.

OG art, if anyone has this dude? LEGAL

Revised Ifh Biff face? LEGAL as well!

FBB, FWB, Summer/Edgar? LEGAL

No, this abomination is ILEGAL

Why do we play?

 And the answer, whilst multiple has a very common element when it comes to these OS formats: nostalgia.

But what is nostalgia?

Our friend the Merriam-Webster dictionary says the following:

1: a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition

We keep devising new so called formats where the cards we discovered the game with are important one more time. Those times will never be back, we are not the same and never will again.

But fun? Yeah, we can have that. Nostalgia is important but never forget the key factor in all of this: fun with like minded people.

The philoshopy of Overprinted MTG and the choice of sets present in it veers around playing with the same cards we used to play (give or take a dual here or there of course). Most of us never played with the P9 much less in 1994 or 95. Assemble a pile of cards from the most overprinted sets in the era and get it on with the fun!
